So come on out with a dish and learn more about what they have going on.

ANNUAL MINK SHOW PROTEST

Alliance for Animals is in the process of investigating where the 2007 annual mink show will be held. Last year it was held on the 2nd weekend in January at the Sheraton, Four Points by the Milwaukee Airport. We have yet to find out if it will be the same this year, but regardless... we are still planning to protest the show wherever it may be. In the meantime, if you hear anything or find more info on it, do not hesitate to forward AFA () what you find.

Let's get Foie Gras Banned in Milwaukee

Trying to keep pace with all the other major cities throughout the US, Alliance for Animals is looking at trying to get foie gras banned in Milwaukee. The downside to a group that is run primarily by vegans, we are out of touch with the businesses that serve such a horrible and cruel dish. We are asking for help from those of you who may know of places that serve foie gras. We are compiling a list of these places so we can contact and set up meeting to see if they will voluntarily stop the sale of foie gras, before it is illegal! So if you know of any place in the Milwaukee area that serves it, !

Spring Line-Up of Speakers

This Spring Alliance for Animals-Milwaukee will be bringing a few well known names to town. Be sure to check in with us in the following weeks to see how planning is coming along and how you can help with the events surrounding the speakers coming into town.

Dr. Michael Gregor (http://www.drgreger.org/) recently released his book Bird Flu, A Virus of Our Own Hatching. He is one of AFA’s favorite speakers, with a wide array of topics he can speak about. We look forward to what he has to say and the many jokes he has to tell!

Will Potter (http://www.willpotter.com/) is a journalist from the DC area. He has followed the SHAC 7 trial closely and has dissected the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act. He has spoken at many conferences throughout the country and we look forward to bringing him to Milwaukee for the first time.

Nathan Runkle is the founder and director of Mercy for Animals (http://www.mercyforanimals.org). He is a long time champion for the animals and knows what he is talking about. We’ll be bringing him into town to conduct some workshops/training for activists who are ready to kick things into high gear.

Pick of the Week: What is Rendered Meat?

Rendered meat products are used to feed most animals destined for meat-eating human's plate, as well in many pet foods. Some rendered product-label names are: meat meal, meat by-products, poultry meal, poultry by-products, fish meal, fish oil, yellow grease, tallow, beef fat and chicken fat.

Rendering is the process of cooking raw animal material to remove the moisture and fat. The rendering plant works like a giant kitchen. The cooker, or ‘chef,’ blends the raw product, thousands of dead dogs and cats, heads and hooves from cattle, sheep, pigs and horses, whole skunks, rats and raccoons all swarming with millions of maggots.

Once the mass is cut into small pieces, it is transported to another auger for fine shredding. It is then cooked at 280 degrees for one hour. During this cooking process, the soup produces a fat of yellow grease or tallow that rises to the top and is skimmed off. The cooked meat and bone are sent to a hammermill press, which squeezes out the remaining moisture and pulverizes the product into a gritty powder. Shaker screens sift out excess hair and large bone chips. Once the batch is finished, all that is left is yellow grease, meal and bone meal.

Every day, hundreds of rendering plants across the United States truck millions of tons of this ‘food enhancer’ to poultry ranches, cattle feed-lots, dairy and hog farms, fish-feed plants and pet-food manufacturers where it is mixed with other ingredients to feed the billions of animals that meat-eating humans, in turn, will eat. Rendered animals often contains campylobacter and salmonella bacteria, enormous amounts of pesticides and plastics, veterinary drug residues, and toxic heavy metals such as arsenic, lead, cadmium, and mercury. These bacteria and toxins are passed on to the cattle and can be cycled to humans who eat beef contaminated by feces during slaughter

Renderers are the silent partners in the American food chain and what goes into animals eventually ends up in you, if you eat that animal. The only way to avoid this it to GO VEGAN!!!

3 December 2006: MONDAY DEMO!

Join AFA Madison and HSUS at Noon on Dec. 4 to Urge Rep. Sensenbrenner to Bring the Animal Fighting Bill to House for Vote

HSUS is putting out an urgent call for an end run at the Animal Fighting Prohibition Act. We are now at the point where the situation is dire and we need your help. The bill has the support of over 3/4 of the U.S. House and passed the Senate unanimously. Rep. Sensenbrenner, the Chair of House Judiciary, has been holding the bill hostage and refuses to let it come to the floor for a vote. We are confident we would win any House vote if Sensenbrenner would budge on the bill. The House is returning to work for a final few days next week and we are facing our last chance to pass this bill.

HSUS will be flying to WI for the event and really need to rally the troops for the demo. They emailed their Wisconsin district-5 list this afternoon but they need everyone is the area to hear about this event. Please try to attend and forward this alert on to any concerned animal advocates in the Milwaukee/Chicago area.

What’s Vegan Friendly in Milwaukee?

Alliance for Animals is in the process of updating our long over-due Veg-Friendly Guide to Milwaukee. If you have been a long time vegan in Milwaukee or new to the area, it’s nice to find new places to shop and grab a bit to eat. To update this guide it will take a lot of work and a lot of effort. So to make it easier on those who are handling it, how about a little help? Send us your favorite vegan friendly places in Milwaukee. Or if you would like to work on this project, email us at:

Pick of the Week

Dogfighting is a sadistic "contest" in which two dogs - specifically bred, conditioned, and trained to fight - are placed in a pit to fight each other, for the spectators' gambling and entertainment. Fights average nearly an hour in length and often last more than two hours. Dogfights end when one of the dogs is no longer willing or able to continue. In addition to these dogfights, there are reports of an increase in unorganized, more spontaneous street fights in urban areas.

The suffering injuries inflicted and sustained by dogs participating in dogfights are frequently severe, even fatal. Dogs used in these events often die of blood loss, shock, dehydration, exhaustion, or infection hours or even days after the fight. Other animals are often sacrificed as well. Some owners train their dogs for fights using smaller animals such as cats, rabbits, or small dogs. These "bait" animals are often stolen pets or animals obtained through "free to good home" advertisements.

Dogfighting is illegal in all 50 states and a felony offense in almost every state. Spectators provide much of the profit associated with dogfighting. The money generated by admission fees and gambling helps keep this "sport" alive. Spectators are willing participants who support a criminal activity through their paid admission and attendance and in Wisconsin, unlike other states where it’s a felony, this is only a misdemeanor.

26 November 2006: Continuing the Campaign, Vegan Meet Up, AFA's Wish List

Thanks For Coming Out, Let's Keep At It!

Alliance for Animals has every intention of continuing it's campaign all winter long. This next Friday (Dec 1st, 2006) We'll be back at AJ Ugent to let them know we are not done with them. AFA's Wish List

It is the holiday season and we all have gifts we would like to receive, even when we tell everyone that we really don't want anything. Well, Alliance for Animals is more than willing to let people know what we want. What we are looking for, won't cost a dime...just a little thought.

  • 1/3 cup Dried Cranberries
  • 1/3 cup Maple Syrup

  • 1/4 cup Coconut
  • 1/4 t. ground Ginger
  • safflower oil, for oiling casserole dish
  • 1/2 cup Pecans, roughly chopped

19 November 2006: Fur-Free Friday!

This week's list is going to be relatively short. There is only one thing Alliance for Animals needs people to focus on this week...FUR FREE FRIDAY.

All across the country grass-roots animal rights groups are organizing demonstrations and events to protest the horrors of the fur industry. Fur Free Friday happens on the busiest day of the shopping year...The day after Thanksgiving. This year it'll be on Friday, November 24th 2006.

Alliance for Animals (along with CUFA-Citizens United for Animals) has decided to once again set up shop in front of AJ Ugent Furs (8333 W Capitol Dr). This location has been used several times in the past and the owners of the store are not happy about it. We'll be starting at 12noon and lasting till about 1:30.

Afterwards, in AFA tradition, we'll be heading out to eat and talk about continuing our anti-fur campaign.

This is one of the most important days for animal activism of the year. For those who are undecided if they would want to head out, please consider the fact that the fur industry is dying and we need to keep the pressure alive to finish the job. When we win this battle, it will set in motion a precedent for the animal rights movement and the ability to succeed.

Victories for the animals at the Ballot Box!

Last week brought some good news (and maybe a little bad) to animal rights activists around the nation...

Michigan voters stepped up for mourning doves, crushing Proposal 3 on the ballot and restoring the 100-year tradition of protecting the state's official bird of peace from target shooting. The vote was 68 percent to 32 percent. The Humane Society of the United States spearheaded the effort to protect mourning doves, from garnering more than 1,000 endorsements to relentlessly canvassing the state in support of the issue. Michigan voters listened, and the gentle backyard songbird will remain safe from target shooters.

In Arizona, humane treatment of farm animals won the day when voters cast their ballot in favor of Proposition 204, which bans gestation crates for breeding pigs and veal crates for young calves. Agribusiness and other special interests spent $2.5 million to defeat Proposition 204. It is the second state in the nation to ban gestation crates and the first state to ban veal crates. The vote was 61 percent in favor and only 39 percent opposed.

Tofu Demystified!

There are two main kinds of tofu: silken and regular. Silken tofu, also called soft, silk or Japanese-style tofu has a softer consistency than regular tofu and will fall apart if not handled carefully. You may notice that silken tofu, unlike regular tofu, is sometimes packaged in aseptic boxes that do not require refrigeration. Because of this, silken tofu is sometimes sold in a different section of grocery stores than regular tofu, which is packed in water and requires refrigeration. Both silken and regular tofu can be found in soft, medium, firm and extra firm consistencies. They are made from the same ingredients, but they are processed slightly differently, and are not interchangeable in a recipe.

Silken Tofu

Most recipes will let you know when silken tofu is needed. There is little difference between firm and extra firm tofu, and for most purposes, the different kinds of silken tofu are interchangeable, so don’t worry if your grocer only stocks one kind. Salad dressings, sauces and desserts usually use silken tofu for a thick and creamy texture. Silken tofu in an aseptic container has a shelf life of up to a year, unopened. Once opened, submerge any used portion with water in a container, cover, and refrigerate for up to a week.

Regular Tofu

Also called Chinese-style tofu or bean curd is more common than silken tofu and comes in a plastic container in the refrigerator or produce section of most grocery stores. Firm or extra firm regular tofu is best used in stir-fries, tofu bakes or any dish where you will want the tofu to retain its shape. For recipes that call for crumbled or mashed tofu, such as mock ricotta or tofu scrambler, firm tofu will work just fine, though medium or soft tofu will have a smoother consistency.

For great tofu recipes and information please visit http://vegweb.com and www.veganchef.com

5 November 2006: Patrice Jones, Fur Free Friday, Veggie Stuffing

Patrice Jones at UW-Milwaukee

Our good friends at UW-Milwaukee, The UWM College Feminists, are bringing in a special speaker this Thursday. Patrice Jones, a brilliant, opinionated and uncomprising activist for many fights, will be speaking at two events. The first Event is going to be centered on activists. Animals rights, feminists, fair trade, labor issues, environmentalists and/or any group that may have accidentally been excluded. This talk will start at 4pm in room 191.

The Second event is for the public. Patrice will be speaking on the common ties between women, gay and animal oppression in a patriarchal society. How we can work together on common ground on these issues. Moreover this will give the motivation and hindsight to see that we must work together. This talk will start at 7pm in room 191

WHEN: Nov. 9th, 4pm and 7pm
WHERE: UW-Milwaukee Student Union; 2200 E. Kenwood Blvd, Room 191

19 November 2006: Fur Free Friday - November 24th, 2006

The use of animals for fur is an unnecessary and inhumane practice that is barbaric and far from fashionable. The fur ads you see in magazines and commercials portray fur coats as a symbol of elegance. But these ads fail to show how the original owners of these coats met their gruesome deaths. Millions of innocent and beautiful fur-bearing animals are killed each year on fur farms by anal and vaginal electrocution and in the wild by drowning, trapping, or beating. Many are skinned alive while fully conscious to the pain and terror they are experiencing. The most commonly farmed fur-bearing animals are minks and Wisconsin has the embarrassing distinction of being the top producer in the U.S.

We all know this is wrong and HAS TO stop! Now is your chance to speak out on the behalf of all fur bearing animals. AFA is teaming up with Citizens United for Animals for a demonstration in front of A.J. Ugent Furs, 8333 W. Capitol Drive Milwaukee, WI 53222 on November 24th from 12pm-1:30pm. Signs and literature will be provided. Just show up any time during the demo and join us!

Please contact Pete at for details.

Spaying and Neutering: A Solution for Suffering

Many people enjoy the companionship of cats and dogs, but domestication took these animals out of their natural environment, and predators or habitat no longer regulates their reproduction. The result is an overpopulation crisis that can only be offset through widespread spaying and neutering.

One unspayed dog and her offspring can lead to 67,000 dogs in six years. One unspayed cat and her offspring can produce 420,000 cats in seven years. Approximately 70,000 puppies and kittens are born in the United States every day. Animal control agencies and shelters receive approximately 6 to 8 million animals annually. The number of cats and dogs far exceeds the number of loving homes available. Unwanted animals face tragic fates that include cruel treatment, starvation, disease, freezing, highway death, procurement for research laboratories, and more unregulated breeding.

Spaying and neutering helps control overpopulation. It does not affect animals’ energy levels or change their personalities. Female cats and dogs should be spayed soon after the age of 8 weeks. Males should be neutered at 8 weeks of age, but both spaying and neutering can be done safely through most of adulthood. Many cities have low-cost spay and neuter clinics to encourage owners to be responsible before they are faced with unwanted animals and before the animals themselves must pay with their lives.

What You Can Do

Adopt from shelters - and don’t forget about adult animals, who are often overlooked by people seeking a puppy or a kitten. Older companion animals often have the advantage of being housebroken and trained. Urge people who want the companionship of animals to adopt from animal shelters. Support community efforts to legislate mandatory spaying and neutering. And if you know someone who is hesitant to have an animal spayed or neutered, explain to them the importance of the procedure and why it is so beneficial.

22 October 2006: Recruitment Time, Vegan Fare Outing, Vegan Essentials, Mushroom Stroganoff

Recruitment Drive for UW-Milwaukee

Currently Alliance for Animals is in the planning process for the next semester at UW-Milwaukee. We have been looking at bringing in Nathan Runkle, the Founder and Director of Mercy for Animals (www.mercyforanimals.org), as well as Will Potter, the award winning reporter from Washington D.C. (http://www.greenisthenewred.com/blog/bio).

Most importantly, however, we need more students involved in the campus group in order to maintain the survival of the organization. Alliance for Animals will be focusing a lot of effort over the next several months finding new members and training current members who would like to get more involved with the group and leadership within the group.

If you are interested in having a leadership role in the campus organization, please contact us at

Vegan Essentials was established in 1997 and has grown ever since. Even though virtually all their business is done through online orders, they do have a storefront in Milwaukee.

The people who work there are very personable, knowledgeable, and a lot of fun. If you get a chance to stop on by 3707 N. 92nd St (basically, 92nd and Lisbon) between the hours of noon and 6pm on weekdays. If that doesn’t work for you, don’t forget about the website that started it all: www.veganessentials.com

Fur Free Friday

It's that time of year where the temperatures drop and animal rights activist all over the country gear up for one of the biggest days of activism all over the country. November 24th is the day after Thanksgiving this year. Make sure you leave 12noon till 2pm open that day to join us in a demonstration in front of one of Milwaukee's fur dealers. The location will be released soon...

Pick of the Week: Animals Communicate!

Most animals (including people) use "body language" as well as sound and smell in order to communicate with one another. Communication is so important that even the amoeba (an organism made up of a single cell) communicates with other amoebas by chemical discharge. By doing this, one amoeba attracts others to it for reproduction.

  • Bees dance when they have found nectar. The scout bee will dance in the hive, and the dance directs other bees to the location of the nectar.
  • Chimpanzees greet each other by touching hands.
  • Male fiddler crabs wave their giant claw to attract female fiddler crabs.
  • White-tailed deer show alarm by flicking up their tails.
  • Dogs stretch their front legs out in front of them and lower their bodies when they want to play.
  • Elephants show affection by entwining their trunks.
  • Giraffes press their necks together when they are attracted to each other.
  • Gorillas stick out their tongues to show anger.
  • Horses rub noses as a sign of affection.
  • Kangaroos and rabbits thump their hind legs to warn others of danger.
  • Prairie dogs bare their teeth and press their mouths together to discover if they are friends or foes.
  • Whales breach (leap out of the water) repeatedly to send messages to other whales.
  • Swans entwine their long necks both to fight and to court.

Oppose the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act (AETA)

H.R. 4239, the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act (AETA), is a bill that could make it a crime punishable by imprisonment to cause any business classified as an "animal enterprise" to suffer a loss of profit - even if the company's financial decline is the result of legal activities, such as peaceful protests, consumer boycotts or media campaigns. The term "animal enterprise" would include manufacturers, distributors and sellers of animals or animal products, research facilities, pet stores, breeders, zoos, rodeos, circuses, and animal shelters and the like. While the ASPCA strongly opposes acts of violence, including vandalism, property damage and trespass, this bill threatens to criminalize as "terrorism" otherwise lawful, constitutionally protected acts often utilized by citizens and organizations to effect change. Lawful and peaceful protests that, for example, urge a consumer boycott of a company that does not use humane procedures, could be the target of this provision if the activity resulted in economic damage to the company.

The bill would also make it illegal to expose cruel conditions at facilities such as puppy mills and research labs, if exposure of such conditions - even if done lawfully - would result in economic damage to the animal enterprise. There is no exemption in the bill to exclude "economic damage" that results from the disclosure of information about a company’s treatment of animals, which is disclosed through public information.

The AETA has already been passed in the Senate, and a vote in the House is expected very soon. It is critical that you contact your representative immediately to show your opposition to H.R. 4239 and urge him or her to protect our First Amendment rights to freedom of speech by opposing H.R. 4239. Go to this website and enter your zip code in the box on the left to get contact information for your House Representative. http://www.congress.org/congressorg/home If you need help composing a letter to your representative, let Alliance for Animals know and we will help you. Milwaukee Vegetarian Kids Playgroup

Are you vegetarian? Do you have kids that you are raising as vegetarians? Or do you know somebody who is raising their kids vegetarian? If so, you may be interested in a group that our good friend Mohan is putting together. ‘Veggie Kids Milwaukee’ is a non-commercial, informal, unstructured, parent-run, Milwaukee-area playgroup where vegetarian and vegan parents and children can play, interact and forge bonds together. At the moment, they're just getting off the ground and are looking forward to your input and involvement to make this group what you want it to be. We'll start by meeting informally and having the kids play together. Later, we can get fancier or more structured if that's what we want. Please visit http://www.veggiekids.info/ and tell your friends with children!!!

M.A.R.V. (Milwaukee Area Resources for Vegetarians)

M.A.R.V. has been around for a long time with not nearly the recognition it deserves. The group has consistently held vegetarian potlucks in the Milwaukee area for many many years. They even host a vegetarian potluck that usually takes place the week before Thanksgiving. Last year they switched the format to an all vegan potluck and plan on doing the same this year (which will take place on Nov 18th).

SHAC 7: Animal Activists Receive Hefty Prison Sentences

This past Tuesday, September 12th, marked a sad day in the animal rights movement. Three activists, Kevin Kjonaas, Lauren Gazzola, and Jake Conroy, were sentenced to 6 years, 4 years and 4 months, and 4 years respectively in federal prison, to begin early October. The following day, Joshua Harper was sentenced to 3 years. Darius Fullmer and Andy Stepanian, who are facing 2-3 years, will be sentenced this coming Tuesday, September 19th. Note that these sentences are lengthier than many violent criminals, including rapists and pedophiles receive.

These brave individuals are guilty of no crimes other than exercising their right to free speech as part of the global campaign of Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty (SHAC). They used their voices to speak up for the 500 animals that die EVERY day inside the notorious animal-testing laboratory, Huntingdon Life Sciences (HLS). These men and women are college graduates, teachers, EMTs, community volunteers, and activists who decided to put aside their comfortable, middle-class lifestyles and stand in the face of government repression to speak for those who have no voice.

Huntingdon Life Sciences has been caught in 5 undercover investigations violating various animal welfare laws, including punching beagle puppies in the face and cutting open live primates from their neck to their groin. They are currently being sued by the New Jersey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Because mainstream media refuses to show the cruelty that goes on inside vivisection labs like HLS, the defendants in the SHAC case took it upon themselves to write articles, give speeches, and run websites detailing the cruelties inside HLS.

Although the defendants' speech is protected by the first amendment and they broke no laws, damaged no property, and threatened no one, they were tried and sentenced to many years in federal prison because it was easier for the government to prosecute the above-ground spokespeople than it was to catch the underground activists who actually broke the law. The judge in this case ignored a substantial amount of Supreme Court rulings and case law in deciding the fate of the SHAC 7 so we hope that all defendants will (from prison) successfully appeal her ridiculous and biased ruling.

During their sentencing in New Jersey, the courtroom was so packed full of supporters who flew and drove in from across the country that many supporters were forced to wait in the lobby because there was no more room inside. The SHAC defendants have expressed their deepest gratitude for all the support they have received. Kevin Kjonaas, former president of SHAC, who, like his co-defendant, Josh Harper has spoken at UW-Milwaukee twice, says that others have endured far worse in the history of social justice movements and he will not give up his fight while in prison. He will be back.

Please visit www.shac7.com for more details on the case and to send letters of support and/or to make financial contributions to help with the appeal process. For more information on Huntingdon Life Sciences and to learn why animal testing is both cruel to animals and unsafe for humans, visit: www.InsideHLS.com.

Captive Wildlife used in Dog Training Hearing

There is a hearing on Wed. September 27 that includes discussion on rules that regulate the housing and treatment of captive wildlife used for training hunting dogs. If you can't make it to the hearing, you can e-mail comments by Sept. 22 at 4:00 p.m. to Amy Arthur, assistant to the Natural Resources Board at Address your comments to the Natural Resources Board.

WM51-04 Rules regarding captive wildlife and hounding enclosures

Suggested talking points - (remember usually a 2-3 minute limit)

  1. The DNR is circumventing its own captive wildlife pen specifications in making exceptions for wildlife being used as "live bait" in training enclosures.(Pub. CS-20 Captive Wildlife pen specifications and transportation standards).

  2. Disease transmission potential (see HSUS letter).

  3. DNR and Wildlife Services are circumventing their catch and release standards which state that a so called "nuisance" animal must be released into an environment where it can thrive. Racoons and coyotes trapped and released into private hounding enclosures certainly do not meet that standard.

  4. The WWF, Conservation Congress hunting with dogs committee and others make much of the fact that NT1-11(12) states:

The NRB strongly encourages the use of well trained hunting dogs in the pursuit and retrieval of game - and that the dept. will actively participate in programs which assist and encourage the training of hunting dogs.

Where does it say captive wildlife need to be abused to accomplish this?

  5. Rollcages - these medieval devices are cages containing a trapped animal which in trying to escape pursuing hounds causes the cage to roll over and over. According to the current rules, an animal may be kept in a "training cage" for periods up to 72 hours. Does this include rollcages or are these simply at the 16 hour "chase" limit for ground chase?. What animal can withstand these conditions and for how long and who is monitoring these individual cases? The WWF recently claimed that there are from 3,000-5,000 rollcages in use in the state every year and that a ban on this device would have a "serious adverse impact on hound dog training in the state". It is clear that these devices should be banned from this state and not allowed under any circumstances.

  6. Is keeping a bear, bobcat or raccoon 10 feet off the ground in a "training cage" large enough to lie down or turn around for up to 72 hours in violently cold or unbearably hot weather for the purpose of training dogs really the "highest and best use of the resource" (DNR)

  7. Canned Hunting is illegal in the State of Wisconsin, save for deer- lazy, unskilled or hunters with no sense of fair chase can still corner and kill a trapped deer..and thank goodness we have this resource since deer are so rare here. The definition of canned hunting is: the hunting and/or killing of an animal released into an enclosure with no chance of escape.

We propose that the use of captive wildlife in hounding enclosures is nothing more than "Canned Hunting Lite". The result is the same but it may take the captive a little longer to die - but die it will - either from exposure, from contact with its pursuers, from the physical stress of repeated pursuit scenarios, or at the hands of the owner of the enclosure.

  8. The procurement of FREE! "nuisance" trapped raccoons and (coyotes)? (see final version of rules to substantiate this) has been heavily lobbied by the hounding community. Coyotes which previously had to be purchased from a license game farm for an average of $500 or more, or raccoons, now may be had for the asking- courtesy of the DNR and Wildlife Services. Where is the logic here? What would you take better care of - something that cost you $500 or something that you got for free with more for the asking?

  9. Other points such as:

    • the distance the hounds are to be kept from the captive animal
    • The age of the captive animal
    • Neutering the captive animal
    • Euthanizing the captive animal
    • # of hours of chase or rest for the captive animal
    • # of hours the captive is allowed into a holding pen for food and water
    • Type of escape areas to be provided - specifications
    • Number of dogs allowed per captive animal
    • Potable water and/or shelter in extreme condition
    • How will monitoring of the rules occur, how often and by whom
    • What will be the consequences of misuse of captive animals
    • Justification of practices such as bobbing of tails, cutting of nails, pulling of teeth, killing of captives deemed too aggressive or able to defend themselves.
  10. Points made by other organizations, veterinarians, wildlife biologists and national animal protection agencies - .see other attachments,

Attention: Before making any comments based on the suggested talking points, REVIEW the latest version of the rules since these rules have gone through numerous revisions over the last year - The latest version of the rules should be available at the DNR website or at the hearing itself. Arrive early if you need time to do this.

Remember if you want to comment you must contact: (by 9/22/06)

Milwaukee Vegetarian Kids Playgroup

Are you vegetarian? Do you have kids that you are raising as vegetarians? Or do you know somebody who is raising their kids vegetarian? If so, you may be interested in a group that our good friend Mohan is putting together.

Veggie Kids Milwaukee is a non-commercial, informal, unstructured, parent-run, Milwaukee-area playgroup where vegetarian and vegan parents and children can play, interact and forge bonds together.

What is Armchair Activism?

It is highly effective activism that one can do while sitting at home, using the telephone, the fax machine, the typewriter, the pen, or the computer to let the media, elected officials, department heads, and executives of for-profit and not-for-profit organizations know your position on issues. It is a great way to be a voice for animals, as they have no voices of their own and need us to speak out for them. You can scan magazines and newspapers for articles about animals and reply with letters to the editor. You can email TV stations and networks that air programs or commercials that trivialize or promote animal abuse. You can include a leaflet about animal cruelty with every bill payment and put an anti-cruelty sticker on the envelope. AFA makes armchair activism easy by maintaining an email group devoted solely to armchair activism. You will be alerted to letter writing and telephone opportunities by other group members and can even suggest opportunities yourself. To join this dedicated group of letter writing activists please email and put "Letters" in the Subject line.

Why Leather Stinks

Because it is rarely labeled, when you buy leather, there is no way to tell whose skin you are in. Most leather made in America (55-60%) is from the dead skin of cattle and baby calves from cruel factory farms and miserable slaughterhouses. American leather may also be made of dead horses, sheep, goats or pigs. Leather from Asia could very likely be from one of their numerous dog and cat tanneries, where it has been documented that they accept stolen house pets. Leather from India, where the trade is thriving, likely has the cruelest animal treatment in the world. Many Indian animals are so sick and injured, they are dragged to slaughter. They have hot chili peppers and tobacco rubbed into their panic stricken eyes and their tails roughly twisted and broken to force them stand up just to get their throats slit while they gurgle and choke on their own blood. Many have their legs crudely hacked off and are skinned while still alive. There is not and never will be anything fashionable about supporting the barbarian leather trade no matter what the marketing departments tell you.

Demand Change From the Chinese Government!

From PETA.org 'In a hideously cruel response to an outbreak of rabies in late July, authorities in Mouding County in Southwest China ordered the killing of more than 50,000 dogs, including 4,000 who were immunized against the disease. Officials clubbed many animals to death in the street right before their guardians' eyes. Animals who were not beaten mercilessly died equally violent, gruesome deaths by poisoning or electrocution. Last week, the Chinese government issued orders to kill an additional 500,000 dogs. None of these beloved companions will have the benefit of a humane death, because there isn’t a single law in China that prevents cruelty to animals.

China has a long history of cruelty and violence toward animals. In live-animal markets, animals - including dogs and cats - are skinned alive for their fur; merchants hack flesh from animals, piece by piece, until they finally bleed to death; and animals routinely suffer from broken limbs because they are thrown from the tops of transport trucks onto concrete floors.

Please demand that the Chinese government halt the planned slaughter of dogs and enact strict anti-cruelty laws immediately. PETA will collect these letters, and our president will personally present them to the Chinese government. Also, be sure to forward this alert to your friends and family members and ask them to speak up today.

Pick of the Week

Go Vegan, Save the Earth

You rage at what corporate America is doing to the environment, you conserve water, you recycle, but you still eat meat and dairy? Before you call yourself an environmentalist, know this about animal agriculture:

The 7,000 square mile "dead zone" in the Gulf of Mexico that can no longer support aquatic life was created by U.S. factory farming practices that infect river systems with animal manure and feed-crop fertilizer. Producing a single hamburger patty uses enough fossil fuel to drive a small car 20 miles and enough water to take 20 showers. Cattle ranching is the #1 cause of rainforest destruction at a rate of 125,000 square miles per year. For quarter pound fast food burger made of rainforest beef, 55 square feet of land is consumed. Raising animals for food consumes 50% of all water used in the U.S. It takes 2,500 gallons of water to produce a pound of meat, but only 25 gallons to produce a pound of wheat.

The 10 billion animals raised and killed on factory farms per year eat, drink, urinate, and defacate millions of tons of food and waste. Factory farms are ruining the planet. Buying and eating milk and dairy keep them in business. For more info please visit www.goveg.com or http://www.vegan.org/about_veganism/environment.html.

13 August 2006: Back to School, Vegan Fare Outing, Gartner Snake, Chocolate Cake

School Starts Soon (UWM-Sept. 5th)!

Yes it's true...summer is almost over. As you are preparing for classes and getting your last minute needs for the school year taken care of, don't forget that working in your school is an excellent way to help animals.

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is AFA's main base of operation. UWM will be where most of our events will be held. We will also be basing a lot of outreach out of UWM. By no means do we plan on limiting the group's activities to UWM.

Any UWM student that is interested in helping with tabling, movies, speakers, potlucks, or maybe even becoming an officer... Or any student (college, high school, or grade school) that would like to do some outreach or presentations at their school and thinks Alliance For Animals-Milwaukee can help, please contact us at our email:

Stop the Delisting of Butler's Garter Snake

There are legislators on the JointCommittee for Review of Administrative Rules that are taking steps to delist Butler's garter snake, a species whose range in Wisconsin is only in the southeastern part of the state. This part of the state is highly developed, so any land that is conserved as habitat for the snake is seen by developers as an obstacle. Please write to the committee members and tell them that a decision to delist a species should be made according to scientific evidence, not due to pressure from developers. My information shows four that are for delisting, four that are against and two that have not expressed an opinion.

Here are the names and e-mails of the committee members that want to delist the snake:

Rep Donald Friske (R-Merrill) rep.friske@legis.state.wi.us
Rep Daniel Lemaheiu (R-Oostberg) rep.lemahieu@legis.state.wi.us,
Sen. Tom Reynolds (R- West Allis) sen.reynolds@legis.state.wi.us,
Sen. Grothman (R-West Bend) jolene.churchill@legis.state.wi.us

(this is staff of Sen. Glen Grothman-he doesn't even give a direct e-mail for contact with his constituents)

Here are the addresses for those that support the snake (It's nice to send a note thanking them and asking them to help stop the proposal from going through):

Rep. Marlin Schneider (D - Wisconsin Rapids) rep.schneider@legis.state.wi.us,
Sen. Mark Miller (D - Monona) sen.miller@legis.state.wi.us,
Sen. Robert Jauch (D-Poplar) sen.jauch@legis.state.wi.us,
Rep. Spencer Black (D-Madison) rep.black@legis.state.wi.us

And those I believe have not taken a position yet:

Rep. Deb Towns (R - Jonesville) rep.towns@legis.state.wi.us,
Sen. Cathy Stepp (R-Sturtevant) sen.stepp@legis.state.wi.us

Sample letter

Dear Representative ______ or Senator,

I was disappointed to learn that a committee on which you serve is moving toward delisting Butler's garter snake. As I understand it, listed species have recovery plans developed that include specific criteria that must be met before a species can be considered for delisting. These criteria are developed with information provided by experts from various agencies, universities and individual researchers. It is only through this process that Butler's garter snake should be considered for delisting, not through a legislative process that seems to be driven by pressure from non-scientific interests. Please reconsider this proposal and take action to stop this process from going any further. It would set a dangerous precedent.

Sincerely,

Walk for Farm Animals

Farm Sanctuary is a national, non-profit animal protection organization. Each year they rescue, rehabilitate and provide lifelong care for hundreds of animals rescued from factory farms, stockyards and slaughterhouses. In addition to operating the shelters, they work to gain legal protection for animals used in food production and to raise public awareness about factory farm cruelty and cruelty-free alternatives. The Walk for Farm Animals helps fund Farm Sanctuary’s rescue and protection campaigns. The Walks are held around October 2nd in honor of World Farm Animals Day. Walks are generally 5k - 10k long (about 3 to 6 miles) and are often held in public parks. Alliance For Animals-Milwaukee is planning on organizing a walk for Oct 1st. This might seem a while away, but with all that needs to be done to pull off a successful walk...there is a lot to be done. If you are interested in learning more about the walk, visit: http://www.walkforfarmanimals.org and if you are interested in helping out with the walk, come to our next meeting (this Wednesday) or email us back at:

Pick of the Week: About Wool

Wool is the fur of sheep

Sheep raised for wool are treated with as much callousness and cruelty as other animals raised for their fur- only for a much, much longer miserable amount of time. Most people don't know that sheep raises for wool are often cruelly mutilated without any painkillers in a process called "mulesing" or "live flaying". Farmers use garden shears to cut huge chunks of flesh of the backside of live animals leaving exposed bloody wounds open to infection.

Australian sheep, where most of the worlds wool comes from, are shipped thousands of miles through all types of extreme weather (sometimes over 100 degrees) with little or no food or water to the Middle East on filthy, crowded, disese ridden ships. Many sheep become ill and become stuck in feces, where they die. Sick and injured sheep are ground up in onboard macerator machines even though they may still be alive and kicking. Others are suffocated or trampled by the overcrowding. All of these deaths are slow and agonizing and completely unjustified as we do not need to wear wool!

When the survivors arrive at their Middle Eastern destination, they are treated to a whole new set of tortures and suffering as they go through transport and eventually choke on their own blood from having their throats slit while fully conscious.

Please choose cotton, rayon, synthetic fleece instead of wool products this fall and winter. For more detailed info visit www.savethesheep.com or http://www.peta.org/mc/factsheet_display.asp?ID=55

Veganism in the News

This past Tuesday, the New York Times featured an update on an article they published last Saturday about a vegan ultra-marathon runner, Scott Jurek. Jurek won the Western States race seven straight times between 1999 and 2005, and the 135 mile Badwater race last summer and again this year. The Washington Post also featured a story about it in Thursday’s paper, which was a great chance for the public to see that even athletes can thrive on vegan diets.

Tuesday’s Washington Post also featured an article about veganism and diabetes and quoted renowned physician Dean Ornish and cited a recent study by the Physician’s Committee for Responsible Medicine (www.pcrm.org) that showed vegans loosing more weight and having lower cholesterol and blood sugar.

DawnWatch is a media watchdog, run by Karen Dawn, who sends out e-mail alerts covering animal rights and vegetarianism in print, radio, and on TV (both positive and negative coverage). She also gives the contact info so you can let the media know what you thought of the coverage. You can find her recent alerts and sign up for her e-mail list at: http://www.dawnwatch.com/cgi-bin/dada/mail.cgi/archive/dw1000000dawnwat

Make Veganism Headlines in Milwaukee!

Considering the recent positive coverage of veganism in prestigious newspapers like the NY Times and Washington Post (see above), why not write a letter to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, touting the many benefits of veganism (health, environmental, animal)? You could cite the recent news stories to back you up, and give personal examples of how veganism has changed your life. Karen Dawn details e-mail etiquette and gives tips for letter writing on her website, at: http://www.dawnwatch.com/email_etiquette.htm.

Letters must be under 200 words and you must include your name, address and daytime phone number. Submit a letter to the editor of the Milwaukee Journal online at: http://www2.jsonline.com/news/editorials/submit.asp

What's Scary About Dairy

Cows, like all mammals, make milk to feed their own babies - NOT TO FEED HUMANS. Most small family farms in America have been replaced by corporate-owned factories where cows are warehoused in huge sheds and treated like milking machines with no consideration for the fact that they are living, sentient creatures. They are artificially inseminated and kept pregnant constantly so the milk (and $$) will keep flowing. Growth hormones and unnatural milking machines and schedules cause cows' tender udders to become so swollen and sore that they live in constant pain. The udders become so heavy that they often drag on the ground, resulting in frequent infections and overuse of antibiotics. It's indisputable that milk contains the blood, pus, and scabs associated with infected udders. This is documented and allowed by the USDA. Wisconsin dairy is allowed to average 7 drops of the nasty infected fluids per every 8 oz glass of milk!!!

Dairy products are frequently contaminated with pesticides, growth hormones, and antibiotics. It is also deficient in fiber, Niacin, Vitamin c, and iron and linked to allergies, heart disease cancer, and other diseases. New evidence suggests that milk and milk products also cause, rather than prevent, osteoporosis as the high protein content leaches more calcium from bones than dairy contributes. Better, more efficient sources of calcium are beans, nuts, seeds, fortified fruit juices, and green leafy veggies. To learn more please visit www.MilkSucks.com.

Instead of unwholesome and unnatural cow milk, please try delicious soy, almond, and rice milks, soy cheese, Toffuti ice cream, sour creams, and plain and flavored cream cheeses. All are widely available at most supermarkets and health food stores.

AFA Unveils its New Video Trailer, Sun., July 30th

Alliance For Animals is very fortunate to have acquired a video trailer from other Midwest activists. The trailer has two large TVs that we will use to show animal cruelty footage while distributing leaflets. We are currently looking at Sunday, July 30th, around 6-8pm in the vicinity of Oakland and North Ave. (It’s difficult to make out what’s on the screen unless it’s dark out.) We plan on showing both general animal rights footage, and also footage of the veal industry in order to gain momentum for our anti-veal campaign. If you would like to volunteer for an hour or two, or have any suggestions about good locations to use the trailer, please contact Pete at: .
